
A QS300 VOICES MANAGER FOR YAMAHA DB50, SW60 AND MU10 IN A SINGLE EXCEL WORKBOOK

What for?

Among the XG sound modules, the smaller ones (the DB50 daughterboard, the SW60 sound card, and the MU10 standalone module) have a nice feature: their capability to emulate the voices of the famous Yamaha QS300 synth.This feature has been abandoned on the newest models, and it is partly hidden in Yamaha's documentation. 

To use this feature at its maximum extent (ie with a huge voice pool and an a nice editor to modify all the voice parameters), I recommand Achim Stulgies' superb XG-Gold editor. 

But if you are only looking for an utility to use and handle existing QS300 voices, even the most complex ones (those with 3 or 4 elements), and above all if you don't want to bother with multi-client drivers, try this tool. 

In this second version, you can use it also with a "real" QS300 module: simply check the corresponding checkbox.

The principle is very simple: I collected all the "free" QS300 voices I could find on the Web, and gathered them in a single Excel list. You can use this list to:
		
a) use these voices in you sequencer : select a voice in the list, then copy the sysex parameters into the Windows clipboard, and finally paste them into your sequencer				

b) scan and sort the list according to various criteria, including search substrings

c) add new voices to the list (if you find more than I did, or if you create some with an editor)

c) remove voices you don't like

What do you need?
*********************************************************

a) A PC with Microsoft Excel 97 or higher, and with its keyboard to copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) information to/from the clipboard

b) A sequencer that can store and send sysex data:

   * Cakewalk's or Powertrack's sysex bank manager is OK: see the help sheet

   * XGWorks : OK but more complicated

   * Cubase : not tested

   
     Quick help: you must first create a dummy sysex event in the list editor of a track.  Then select the sysex bytes (Value2) and replace them with the QS300 dump. This is done in one step with simple voices (with 1 or 2 elemnents). For more complex voices (with 3 or 4 elements), you must first paste the QS300 dump in a text editor. Then you'll see that the dump is made of 9 different sysex messages (each beginning with F0 and finished by F7). You must repeat the operation above for each of theses 9 messages separately.
